This term was coined in a famous book that proposed a catalogue of "Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software", and became a best-seller in the Java world (usually referred to as the "GoF" book, for "Gang of Four" authors). I began myself writing a series of Delphi examples aiming to explain the classic design patterns as defined in "Design Patterns (Elements of reusable Object-Oriented Software)" by the "Gang of Four" (GOF). Feeling the golden ore, all editors quickly produced a whole line of similar books, where patterns were adapted to various domains and languages : for C##, for Ruby, , etc. Ralph: Some of those languages don't need some of the See A Look Back: Why We Wrote Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software. Delphi's implementation of interfaces lacks of either a garbage collector (as C# or Java do (ab)use), or at least a native weak reference support (as with Apple's ARC model). Design patterns gained popularity in computer science after the book Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software was published in 1994 by the so-called "Gang of Four" (Gamma et al.). My PhD involved building a message passing library using C#; not accessing an existing MPI library from C# code but creating a brand new MPI library written entirely in pure C#. Larry O'Brien recently interviewed three of the Gang of Four about their seminal work on patterns. I never finished the series for lack of time. World code, it is more difficult than expected. The result is In designing my MPI library I embraced the object- oriented style, using a layered and modular architecture and incorporating six different common software design patterns (described by the “Gang of Four” in “Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software”). Larry teased the interview's readers for awhile, but he eventually Erich: Just as an aside, it is also easy to forget that we wrote design patterns before there was Java or C#.
